Nenad Stekić failed on many occasions to determine himself as a major force, but during his 20-year career he won many international medals and setting several national records and one European record. He finished third at the 1970 European Junior Championships in Paris, and improved over the years, capturing his first Yugoslav title in 1972. He retained it the following year with 7.96 m jump and went on to win his first title at the Balkan Games in Athens with a wind-assisted distance of 8.12 m.
